Saint Martin @ Cleveland Botanical Gardens

The American Horticulture Society National Symposium on Youth Gardening met this week/weekend at the botanical garden. About 200 toured all of the Green Corps gardens around Cleveland where the students involved gave us tours. (if you don’t know about Green Corps, it is an amazing internship program through the Cleveland Botanical Gardens where students spend the summer growing and selling produce & homemade salsa). Lady Lion Amber Colbert, took charge immediately and was clearly the student leader at her site on Chester ave. She was confident and articulate. (This is Amber’s 3rd year in the program, which is a 3 yr program) Once during the tour she was trying to get everyone back to listening and she gently pushed through the crowd to gently touch a woman’s arm to get her to be quiet and listen! (I was so proud I was beaming) Everyone was so impressed by her! After pointing out Art teacher Michelle Brickner as one of her teachers, many people come up to Michelle and asked her about our school saying things like, "How amazing our students must be if Amber is an example!". Then at the Fairfield garden site, Kendra Sopshire was the tour guide! This is Kendra’s first year in Green Corps. She was a great tour guide as well. When you see these two this fall, please engage with them about their experience with Green Corps. These students were paid this summer to learn about the benefits of eating locally grown foods, the agriculture & horticulture industry, vermiculture, composting, etc, and have grown many vegetables in their very own plots.
