Saint Martin @ ArtWorks

This summer two of our students participated in a program called ArtWorks sponsored by Young Audiences, a 6 week summer program where students are paid minimum wage 5 days a week to participate in different arts such as dance, fashion, showmanship and magic, video production and media, jazz and vocals.

At last night’s end of the summer performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Daie Garrett participated in dance and was chosen to perform the night’s only solo and Kai Carter participated in fashion, designing pieces in the runway show.

Read more about the show and program in the Plain Dealer article here…

Below is Daie pictured with cousins Jazmine and Jeanita Blue (who came to watch the show by bus, after a full day of work at Recovery Resources and Sherwin Williams respectively) and Kai pictured with her models wearing designs created by her from all recycled materials.

First Lions to take AP Tests Score Big

Congratulations to all of the following students for their hard work in US Govt and Politics:

Teresa Arteaga, Samantha Newton, Heiry Perez, Autumn Stewart, Shawnetta Stephens, Tiana Wilson

All of these young ladies are rising juniors, so they took the AP test as sophomores! Wow!

Congratulations to the Heritage Spanish students who all scored either a 4 or 5 (out of 5!) on their exams:

Alejandra Arteaga, Teresa Arteaga, Yesenia Bucio, Angel Caban, Yashaira Matos, Heiry Perez, Kiara Perez

Finally, congratulations to the teachers who took on the challenge of preparing students to take the AP exams: Claudia Botoulas and John Monahan!

Saint Martin @ Cleveland Botanical Gardens

The American Horticulture Society National Symposium on Youth Gardening met this week/weekend at the botanical garden. About 200 toured all of the Green Corps gardens around Cleveland where the students involved gave us tours. (if you don’t know about Green Corps, it is an amazing internship program through the Cleveland Botanical Gardens where students spend the summer growing and selling produce & homemade salsa). Lady Lion Amber Colbert, took charge immediately and was clearly the student leader at her site on Chester ave. She was confident and articulate. (This is Amber’s 3rd year in the program, which is a 3 yr program) Once during the tour she was trying to get everyone back to listening and she gently pushed through the crowd to gently touch a woman’s arm to get her to be quiet and listen! (I was so proud I was beaming) Everyone was so impressed by her! After pointing out Art teacher Michelle Brickner as one of her teachers, many people come up to Michelle and asked her about our school saying things like, "How amazing our students must be if Amber is an example!". Then at the Fairfield garden site, Kendra Sopshire was the tour guide! This is Kendra’s first year in Green Corps. She was a great tour guide as well. When you see these two this fall, please engage with them about their experience with Green Corps. These students were paid this summer to learn about the benefits of eating locally grown foods, the agriculture & horticulture industry, vermiculture, composting, etc, and have grown many vegetables in their very own plots.
